UI SEEKS ASSISTANCE TO REOPEN ITS MUSEUM

The UI Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor Peter O. Olapegba, FNPA, has solicited the support of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to reopen the UI Heritage Museum.

He made the request while speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode O. Adebowale mni, FAS, when the 
Deputy Director of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Ibadan Office, Mrs Oluyomi Pamela Otuka 
paid him a courtesy visit. 

Professor Olapegba said the University places priority on tradition and heritage.

He said plans are already afoot for the University to open a proper Museum of which it would be very proud. 

He noted that the University had invested heavily in the preservation of its artefacts and would not wish the efforts to go to waste.

The Deputy Director of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and Curator of the Ibadan Museum of Unity, Mrs Otuka, said the major purpose of the visit was to help revive the UI Musem.

Mrs Otuka said the UI Museum is well stocked with priceless artifacts, adding that some well known museums cannot even boast of as many priceless items.

She urged the University Management to refurbish, conserve and reopen the Museum to the public.

She decried the situation where the artifacts are kept under lock and key saying that some of the items would disintegrate and history would be lost.

Mrs Otuka said we need to keep the artefacts for posterity to educate and enlighten the coming generations to enable them appreciate that we had a past and culture.
