The Director of the University of Ibadan Health Service (UHS), Dr. Aderonke B. Ajav has said that the University Management appreciates the value of good health and staff/community wellbeing.
This, she said, explains why the UHS began an institutional journey to create awareness on how to improve the health levels of all members of the University community through an enlightenment campaign and the creation of awareness on various diseases and prevention methods.
Dr Ajav stated this at the kick-off of a one-day Health Awareness programme organised by the Public Health Unit of the UHS for the University community and its environs.
She stated that the aim of the awareness programme was to sensitise the members of the University community and its environs on the available services at the Jaja Clinic such as:
*Free vaccination for children (MMR) - every Wednesday
*Vaccination for adults (Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine, Hepatitis Vaccine - Monday - Friday
*Regular health check-ups (blood pressure, blood test, urine test, etc) - Monday - Friday
*Free screening and treatment for tuberculosis - Monday - Friday
*Family planning with various methods - Monday, Tuesday, and Friday
*Health Insurance Scheme for three registered people at ₦45,000 for a period of one year
*Counselling and other health services.
Dr. Ajav explained that the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) will begin phase 2 of the HPV vaccines in health facilities, schools, and communities, including Jaja Clinic from Monday, 27 to Friday, 31 May, 2024 from 8 am, each day.
She urged parents and guardians to get their children from age 9-14 vaccinated.
The Director also gave some health tips that would enhance a healthy lifestyle and boost the immune system as
* Regular washing of hands with soap and water
* Good personal hygiene
* Regular health check-ups
* Eating of balanced diets
* Adequate Ventilation
* Taking of organic foods, fruits, and vegetables
* Use of nose mask
* Less consumption of fried foods
* Servicing of vehicles regularly to prevent fumes that could cause lung cancer
* Desisting from drawing fuel from the vehicle tank with mouth
The Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Titilola A. Oni of the Public Health Unit, UHS, said
the Unit seeks to prevent diseases in adults and children from birth through immunisation against such ailments as measles, mumps, and Rubella (MMR).
Staff of the Public Health Unit namely Mrs Roselyn U. Ayeni, Mrs Victoria O. Folorunso, Mr. E. A. Aworinde, Mrs. Omowunmi J. Laniyonu and Mrs. Abimbara R. Adewunmi presented a short drama at the University cab station to educate on vaccination, the importance of regular health check-ups, and family planning to allow child spacing and birth control.
Various places visited during the awareness campaign were the University cab station, Abadina Community, Students Union Building, and some Faculties for the distribution of handbills and health talks.
