UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN DEPLOYS GIS FOR OPTIMIZED HEALTHCARE

University of Ibadan is leading in the use of cutting edge technology for improved healthcare service delivery in Africa by deploying Geographic Information Systems GIS for health information management.

In line with the University’s drive to enhance healthcare and to automate and optimize service delivery, the University Health Service UHS is leveraging on location intelligence and analytical capabilities of GIS to delineate geographic clusters for effective Faculty health checks and its University-wide Covid-19 vaccination exercise. Doctors and health officers have been trained to utilize Geographic Information Systems for data capture, analysis and the UHS has automated and delivering customized health reports to the university community.

GIS is defined as “the Science of Where” that combines mapping and analytics to reveal deeper insight into data, helping users make smarter decisions. The Geographic Information System (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing complex data. Rooted in the science of geography, it is a technology that stimulates innovation and is particularly needed for the sustainable development of Africa and specifically Nigeria.

University of Ibadan is a beneficiary of a Grant of Software and other Associated Digital Learning Platforms from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) San Diego, USA since 2014 and is utilizing it for teaching, research and innovation for sustainable development.

Indeed, the University of Ibadan is a leader in healthcare service delivery.
