ILO IN COLLABORATION WITH UI : WORKSHOP ON THE ELIMINATION OF CHILD LABOUR

ACCELERATING ACTION FOR THE ELIMINATION OF CHILD LABOUR IN SUPPLY CHAIN IN AFRICA (SCCEL-AFRICA)

1. Introduction

The University of Ibadan is involved in a collaborative relationship with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to implement aspects of the project named: “Accelerating the Action for the Elimination of Child Labour Chain in Africa”. The areas covered in this collaboration include the adaption of the SCREAM (Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, the Arts and the Media) Modules to the child labour contexts in the cocoa and Artisanal Gold Mines (ASGM) supply chains located in Niger and Ondo States in Nigeria and the training of professionals and stakeholders in the implementation of the skills developed in the adapted modules.

Having agreed to the terms of the project, the University of Ibadan constituted a team led by its Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Adebola Ekanola. The membership of the team consists of academics from disciplines that are considered central to the project. There is in addition, a co-opted member from the Bursary Unit on the request of the ILO. The programme itself is domiciled for certification in the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning of the university. Below is the entire University of Ibadan ACCEL Africa Project team:

2. Objectives and Training

Objective 1: Adapt the Special SCREAM Module on child labour in the Agricultural sector to the Nigeria context.

Objective 2: Develop a special SCREAM module on child labour in the Artisanal Small Scale Mining Sector

Objective 3: Conduct a certificated training for teachers, labour officers, agricultural extension officers, mines field workers and civil society organisations providing education, protection and re-integration services to children in Ondo, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory.

Objective 4: University of Ibadan considers taking up SCREAM Module as a course provided at the university for its students.

3. Certificated Scream Module Training Programme for Teachers and Other Stakeholders in the Cocoa and ASGM Sectors, 8-13 April, 2022 organised by the ILO and UI

The Certificated Module training is the peak of the contract between the University of Ibadan (UI) team (under the leadership of the DVC, Academic) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the ACCEL-Africa project funded by the Netherlands Government.

At the event, the UI team which both adapted the existing Cocoa Plantation Module and developed a new, hitherto inexistent ASGM Module for the ILO, will train stakeholders with the modules to facilitate the implementation of their contents at targeted sites in Nigeria and beyond. The programme will end with the distribution of certificates of participation expected to be signed by the UI Management as an endorsement of the quality of training provided.
