Historical Background
The Asquith Commission on Higher Education in the colonies contributed to the establishment of our Department. The commission recommended that “in every colony to be served by a University, there should certainly be one centre for Extra-Mural Studies.” The University College Ibadan was opened in 1948. Then, the Ashby Commission recommended that there should be a Department of Extra-Mural Studies to cater for interested members of the public who wanted liberal education and did not want to study within the walls of the University. The Department of Extra-Mural Studies was therefore started in 1949.
According to Asquith Commission (and others set up to enquire into higher education in specific areas), Extra-Mural Department should help new universities:
· To maintain direct contact with the community and prevent graduates from becoming a separate class divorced from the aspirations of their fellow-citizens and
· To separate their influence far and wide
The Department could be of service to society in two ways:
· By disseminating knowledge and thus helping to create an informed public opinion, and
· By providing opportunities for real study to those would have profited by University education, but have passed the age for it.
The Asquith Commission emphasized that, in addition to normal tutorial work and the organisation of public lectures and short courses, Extra-Mural Department should undertake the running of vocational and refresher courses for person engaged in the administrative work, teaching, health services, etc. and to give them scope for revising their opinions and extending their knowledge.
Objective of Extra-Mural Studies
· To acquire knowledge in the true university spirit that is, to recognise the facts and test their worth
· To criticize constructively and to develop balanced judgment
· To learn how to find out information for themselves and how to think their way around given problems
· Students should be able to see abstract knowledge or principles as a process of promoting a deeper understanding of Nigerian problems and that of the world at large
· Our Extra-Mural Unit also has a commitments to G.C.E., W.A.E.C., UTME, Model Adult Literacy, JSS I – III and Vocational Skills Acquisition (VOSAP) aspirants. They are to be provided with facilities that make broader knowledge and quickened intellectual faculties possible through private study
· To assist all those who have ambitions to improve their basic education or pursue professional qualifications
· Extra-Mural programme aim at taking students beyond the assimilation of facts to the realm of creative thinking
